E-commerce: a new perspective for the development of the Turkish economy

E-commerce: a new perspective for the development of the Turkish economy One of the most promising and fast-growing sectors of the Turkish economy has become the e-commerce industry. It is expected that in 2021 it will generate even more profit and become one of the main pillars of the country's economy.

One of the positive effects of the pandemic for Turkey was the development of the e-commerce sector. It is expected that in 2021, this industry will become one of the leading in the country's economy.

Oget Kantarchi, CEO of GittiGidiyor, Turkey's first and largest online auction site, and Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa at eBay, said that following the growing trend of digital adoption, e-commerce platforms grew and expanded during the pandemic.

Quoting data from the Turkish Ministry of Finance, Kantarchi said that e-commerce increased by 64% in the first half of 2020 compared to the same period last year and reached 91.7 billion Turkish liras ($12.37 billion), demonstrating the potential for further development.

E-commerce is expected to exceed 200 billion liras by the end of 2020.

According to the Turkish Interbank Card Center, the total amount of money spent on online transactions reached 29 billion Turkish liras in November, an increase of 54% compared to the same month in 2019.

Kantarci believes that the sector will not have problems with retention of the customer base because, according to the laws, people who purchase online, and later returned for a new one.

However, as the number of customers increases, so does the load, and platforms should carefully plan their expansion to avoid delays in customer service or too rapid growth.
